The Infinite Scroll Incident
It began with a loose edge.
A single thread of parchment hanging slightly out from a tightly rolled scroll.
Pip noticed it immediately.
“…Archivist.”
Orrin did not look up.
“Yes, Pip.”
“This scroll is unraveling.”
“…Then do not assist it.”
Pip nodded.
“…Understood.”
A pause.
Pip gently pinched the edge of the parchment.
And pulled.
The scroll loosened slightly.
A bit more parchment slipped free.
Pip tilted his head.
“…It continues.”
Orrin turned a page.
“…Yes.”
Pip pulled again.
More parchment.
Still more.
“…Archivist.”
“…Pip.”
“It is still continuing.”
“…Then stop pulling it.”
Pip paused.
Looked at the scroll.
Then at the growing length of parchment now pooling at his feet.
“…It may be too late.”
Orrin slowly raised his head.
Pip held up the scroll.
The parchment was now trailing across the floor.
Out past the desk.
Down the aisle.
“…Pip.”
“Yes?”
“…Release it.”
“I believe it is releasing itself.”
The scroll shifted.
Uncoiling further.
More parchment spilling out.
Lines of text began to appear.
Endless.
Tightly written.
Orrin stood.
“…What scroll is that.”
Pip checked the header as it passed by.
“…Archive Complaint Log.”
Orrin froze.
“…No.”
The parchment continued to pour out.
Faster now.
Sliding across the floor in a widening path.
Pip stepped back.
“…It is extensive.”
Chronos looked up from across the room.
Watched the scroll pass his feet.
He reached down.
Picked up a section.
Read silently.
A faint smile appeared.
“…Detailed.”
Orrin moved quickly.
“…Do not read that.”
Chronos tilted his head.
“…Why.”
“It is not for casual review.”
Pip scanned a passing line.
“…Entry 4721: ‘Chronos adjusted temporal flow without authorization.’”
Chronos continued reading.
“…That seems minor.”
Pip followed the scroll as it moved.
“…Entry 9833: ‘Chronos consumed restricted archive snacks during observation period.’”
Chronos nodded.
“…Valid.”
Orrin stepped forward and grabbed the scroll.
Attempted to roll it back.
It resisted.
The parchment continued to feed out from the original scroll.
Unstoppable.
“…Pip.”
“Yes?”
“…Stop the extraction.”
“I am not extracting.”
The scroll surged again.
More text.
More entries.
More records.
Pip read another line.
“…Entry 12044: ‘Chronos encouraged experimental misuse of unknown object.’”
Chronos glanced toward the satchel.
“…Unconfirmed.”
Orrin pulled harder.
The scroll slipped from his grasp.
Unrolling further.
Down another aisle.
Around a shelf.
“…This is not possible.”
Pip crouched, watching it flow.
“…It contains many complaints.”
“…Yes.”
“…About Chronos.”
“…Yes.”
Chronos folded his hands behind his back.
“…An impressive collection.”
Orrin turned sharply.
“…You will not comment on this.”
Pip pointed.
“…It is still going.”
The parchment now stretched across the archive floor like a river.
Endless.
Unfolding.
Orrin exhaled slowly.
“…Of course it is.”
Pip scribbled rapidly.
Artifact Log — Unbounded Scroll Event
• scroll length exceeds physical constraints
• continuous data output observed
• content identified as archive complaint records
• primary subject — Chronos
He paused.
Then added:
Scroll termination point — not found
Orrin leaned over.
“…Pip.”
“Yes?”
“Do not attempt to find it.”
“…Noted.”
Across the archive the scroll continued to unroll.
Steady.
Relentless.
Chronos stepped over it carefully.
Paused.
Looked down at a passing line.
“…Entry 1.”
Orrin froze.
“…Chronos.”
Chronos glanced up.
“…Yes.”
“…Do not.”
Chronos looked back down.
“…Curious how it began.”
Orrin moved quickly.
Snatched the scroll section from his view.
“…This incident is now contained.”
The scroll continued moving.
Behind him.
Unstoppable.
Pip watched it go.
“…It is not contained.”
Orrin did not turn.
“…It is conceptually contained.”
A pause.
The scroll slid past.
Still writing.
Still growing.
Then—
very faintly—
new text appeared at the leading edge.
Pip leaned closer.
“…Archivist.”
“…What.”
Pip pointed.
“…It is still updating.”
Orrin closed his eyes.
“…Of course it is.”
