The Day Chronos Discovered Bubble Wrap

It arrived without warning.

A small package.

Plain.

Unremarkable.

Left on the archivist desk.

Orrin eyed it briefly.

“…Mandy.”

“Yes?”

“What is this.”

“A delivery.”

“…From where.”

Mandy shrugged.

“It just showed up.”

Orrin did not like that answer.

He opened the package carefully.

Inside was a sheet of small, air-filled pockets.

Transparent.

Perfectly uniform.

Orrin stared.

“…Curious.”

Pip appeared instantly.

“What is it?”

“…Unknown.”

Pip poked one.

pop

Both froze.

Pip’s eyes widened.

“…It made a sound.”

Orrin leaned closer.

“…Yes.”

Pip poked another.

pop

Another.

pop pop

Orrin straightened.

“…Do not—”

Too late.

Pip used both hands.

POP POP POP POP

The archive echoed.

Scrolls shifted slightly on their shelves.

Orrin raised a wing.

“…Pip.”

Pip stopped.

Looked up.

“…Yes?”

“…Give it to me.”

Pip handed over the sheet.

Orrin examined it.

Carefully.

He pressed one.

pop

A pause.

Orrin blinked.

Pressed another.

pop

A longer pause.

Pip leaned forward.

“…Archivist?”

Orrin handed it back immediately.

“…This object is unstable.”

Chronos stepped closer.

“…May I.”

Orrin hesitated.

Then—

“…No.”

Chronos took it anyway.

Pressed one.

pop

He paused.

Pressed three more in sequence.

pop pop pop

A faint smile appeared.

“…Satisfying.”

Pip lit up.

“Yes.”

They both pressed more.

POP POP POP POP POP

The archive filled with sharp, rhythmic bursts.

Orrin closed his eyes.

Very slowly.

“…Stop.”

They did not stop.

POP POP POP

Orrin’s eye twitched.

“…Stop.”

Chronos paused.

“…One more.”

POP

Pip followed.

POP POP

Orrin inhaled.

Deep.

Measured.

“…That is enough.”

Silence returned.

For three seconds.

Then—

pop

Orrin opened his eyes.

Pip froze.

“…It was already under pressure.”

Chronos nodded.

“…Naturally.”

Orrin removed the sheet from both of them.

Folded it.

Placed it back in the box.

Closed the lid.

Set it aside.

“…This object will be contained.”

Pip scribbled quickly.

Artifact Log — Acoustic Pressure Device

• produces sharp sound when compressed

• encourages repeated interaction

• rapidly escalates in volume

• affects focus within archive

He paused.

Then added:

Potential communication device — classification uncertain

Orrin leaned over his shoulder.

“…Pip.”

“Yes?”

“Erase the communication hypothesis.”

“…Noted.”

Across the room the closed box sat quietly.

Still.

Harmless.

Then from inside—

pop

Orrin did not turn.

“…Of course.”
